DO I WISH this was true. If so, I’d easily be the smartest human on the planet because I’m stubborn enough to read just about anything cover to cover. Even textbooks. And that’s the first strategy I attempted. I ordered dozens of textbooks, devoted countless hours to reading them, and progressed at a snail’s pace for 6 months. Sure, if I had nothing to do for the next 20 years this strategy could work, but not realistic.
LAME ADVICE #2 – YOU CAN TOTALLY TEACH YOURSELF THIS WITH FREE LECTURES ON THE INTERWEBS
The common advice here is “Dude, you can find everything you need to learn with free lectures on the internet.” What they don’t mention is that 1) these free lectures aren’t crafted specifically to help you learn and 2) the lectures are scattered and don’t build off each other to tell a clear story.
So you get talked at for hours on end, absorb a little of it, have the vast majority go in one and ear out the other, and waste time scouring the internet attempting to fill in the gaps.
LAME ADVICE #3 – DIDN’T YOU LEARN THIS IN SCHOOL?
Maybe you actually have a formal education in chemistry, physics, and/or human physiology, and had an amazing professor that got the information to stick for you. If so, I’m happy for you but you are in the minority.
Most people I know feel like they were force-fed information simply to memorize it, regurgitate it on a test, and then immediately forget 95% of it.
LAME ADVICE #4 – JUST WORK HARDER!
Sometimes this is absolutely the case and the person in question needs to put in more time and effort. But I’ve found the truth is often the opposite. The person needs to start working smarter and not harder. They don’t have a system/framework in place to optimize their ability to absorb and learn new information, so they waste hours spinning their wheels.
Following this advice led to nothing but frustration, and constantly doubting myself, my knowledge, and my abilities.
SO I QUIT MY JOB, TOOK OUT A $20,000 LOAN, AND MOVED ACROSS THE COUNTRY
After letting this mental virus fester for several months I made the incredibly difficult decision to leave a job I loved to go back to school, but not graduate school…I’m talking full-blown undergraduate classes because I didn’t have the prerequisites required to get into graduate school for a Ph.D. in integrative physiology (which was my goal at the time).
So, I moved out to Salt Lake City, Utah, where I didn’t know a single person within several hundred miles, took out a $20,000 student loan, and enrolled in 4 semesters worth of undergraduate science courses…everything from general chemistry to organic chemistry to biochemistry to cell biology.
To say it was a little embarrassing being 25/26 years old sitting in a room full of 17/18-year-old kids who couldn’t legally consume alcohol for another 3 years would be an understatement.
But frankly, I was obsessed. I had to get rid of this voice. I needed to better understand the WHY so I could stop doubting myself and truly be confident as a coach and practitioner.
The only way I knew how to do that was to push all my chips in that direction, so I did.
I ended up spending 4 semesters knocking out undergraduate prerequisites before transitioning to graduate school where I was fortunate to spend 2.5 years as part of the Utah Vascular Research Lab getting a world-class education in advanced human physiology with a special emphasis on the oxygen cascade.
After finishing all of my graduate-level coursework, and having my name on numerous publications, I decided to walk away from the Ph.D. because I love teaching and coaching more than writing grants (i.e. why I made this course).
