For those brave souls that want to dive into the weeds and learn advanced respiratory, cardiovascular and muscular physiology (minus the grad school price tag)
Do you understand the WHY behind things? Or are you stuck copying other people that are smarter than you? Well today – you get to discover how oxygen gets from the atmosphere to the muscle mitochondria and how to manipulate it (even if you have no science background).

EVER FEEL LIKE YOU’VE RUN INTO A CEILING?
Back in 2015, I was living in Boston, Massachusetts, and working at a gym called Pure Performance Training.
I was one of the lucky few people in this world who could wake up and look forward to going to work every day.
I had amazing clients, loved the people I worked with, and was making more than enough money to pay the bills, put the food on the table, and save for fun and vacations.
But something wasn’t right.
I had this voice in the back of my head that I couldn’t get rid of. Like an annoying mosquito that kept poking and prodding my brain telling me that I wasn’t good enough, that I wasn’t where I should be in my progression as a coach, and that I’d hit a ceiling.
It left me frustrated, on edge, lacking confidence, and full of self-doubt.
The thing is I had done everything “right” to that point in my career. I had completed two of the top internships in the world at Cressey Performance and IFAST, I’d devoured every book I could find on training, programming, movement, biomechanics, and behavior change, and I was delivering incredible results for all of my athletes and clients.
So what gives? Why did I have this annoying little voice in the back of my head that I just couldn’t get rid of? Why was I doubting myself, lacking confidence, and feeling like a fraud?
What I realized was that I wanted to join a different tier of coaches. I saw the top coaches and practitioners in the industry and realized they were having a very different conversation than I was able to partake in. They understood the WHY behind things, while I was busy copying and using more of a plug and chug method.
To join that conversation and truly understand the WHY behind things, I needed to get into more advanced science material like physics, chemistry, and physiology (the stuff most people avoid because it’s hard).
But I quickly ran into a ceiling because I had no background in the sciences.
I’d try reading the physiology textbook I’d bought, but it felt like I was going backward in the educational process because I had missed the important foundations that would allow me to understand what I was trying to read.
CUE BANGING HEAD AGAINST WALL…
I can tell you from first-hand experience how difficult and frustrating it can be to try and lift back the hood on human physiology and truly understand the why behind what’s going on.
Especially when you don’t have a strong science background…
Or maybe you have a science background but had a hard time getting the material to stick the first time through because 1) it was taught poorly or 2) you had no application for it.
Trust me…I’ve been there.
I was so hungry to dive into the weeds and better understand advanced human physiology but struggled to do so on my own. Despite following all the typical advice:
LAME ADVICE #1 – JUST READ MORE BOOKS AND YOU’LL GET IT
DO I WISH this was true. If so, I’d easily be the smartest human on the planet because I’m stubborn enough to read just about anything cover to cover. Even textbooks. And that’s the first strategy I attempted. I ordered dozens of textbooks, devoted countless hours to reading them, and progressed at a snail’s pace for 6 months. Sure, if I had nothing to do for the next 20 years this strategy could work, but not realistic.
LAME ADVICE #2 – YOU CAN TOTALLY TEACH YOURSELF THIS WITH FREE LECTURES ON THE INTERWEBS
The common advice here is “Dude, you can find everything you need to learn with free lectures on the internet.” What they don’t mention is that 1) these free lectures aren’t crafted specifically to help you learn and 2) the lectures are scattered and don’t build off each other to tell a clear story.
So you get talked at for hours on end, absorb a little of it, have the vast majority go in one and ear out the other, and waste time scouring the internet attempting to fill in the gaps.
LAME ADVICE #3 – DIDN’T YOU LEARN THIS IN SCHOOL?
Maybe you actually have a formal education in chemistry, physics, and/or human physiology, and had an amazing professor that got the information to stick for you. If so, I’m happy for you but you are in the minority.
Most people I know feel like they were force-fed information simply to memorize it, regurgitate it on a test, and then immediately forget 95% of it.
LAME ADVICE #4 – JUST WORK HARDER!
Sometimes this is absolutely the case and the person in question needs to put in more time and effort. But I’ve found the truth is often the opposite. The person needs to start working smarter and not harder. They don’t have a system/framework in place to optimize their ability to absorb and learn new information, so they waste hours spinning their wheels.
Following this advice led to nothing but frustration, and constantly doubting myself, my knowledge, and my abilities.
SO I QUIT MY JOB, TOOK OUT A $20,000 LOAN, AND MOVED ACROSS THE COUNTRY
After letting this mental virus fester for several months I made the incredibly difficult decision to leave a job I loved to go back to school, but not graduate school…I’m talking full-blown undergraduate classes because I didn’t have the prerequisites required to get into graduate school for a Ph.D. in integrative physiology (which was my goal at the time).
So, I moved out to Salt Lake City, Utah, where I didn’t know a single person within several hundred miles, took out a $20,000 student loan, and enrolled in 4 semesters worth of undergraduate science courses…everything from general chemistry to organic chemistry to biochemistry to cell biology.
To say it was a little embarrassing being 25/26 years old sitting in a room full of 17/18-year-old kids who couldn’t legally consume alcohol for another 3 years would be an understatement.
But frankly, I was obsessed. I had to get rid of this voice. I needed to better understand the WHY so I could stop doubting myself and truly be confident as a coach and practitioner.
The only way I knew how to do that was to push all my chips in that direction, so I did.
I ended up spending 4 semesters knocking out undergraduate prerequisites before transitioning to graduate school where I was fortunate to spend 2.5 years as part of the Utah Vascular Research Lab getting a world-class education in advanced human physiology with a special emphasis on the oxygen cascade.
After finishing all of my graduate-level coursework, and having my name on numerous publications, I decided to walk away from the Ph.D. because I love teaching and coaching more than writing grants (i.e. why I made this course).

Despite leaving with zero letters next to my name, I walked away overflowing with confidence because I had put the voice the rest. There was no more frustration and self-doubt because I had done the work, acquired the knowledge, and finally understood the why.
My ability to progress and move forward as both a coach and practitioner was no longer capped, and I was finally able to move from the kid’s table to the adult table.
Plus, I know I can learn anything moving forward because I’ve built myself a mountain of a foundation.

HOW DO YOU LEARN ADVANCED HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY?
After spending well over 5 years of my life with this material, I genuinely, 100% believe that anyone can learn this stuff.
Is it easy? Absolutely not.
It’s going to take time and effort on your end, but it is doable. Also, I think it’s far easier to learn this stuff now than when you were in school the first time around.
Because the first time around you didn’t have an application for what you were trying to learn besides “memorize this because it’s going to be on the test.”
When it comes to learning this material I think you have 3 options:
Here’s an okay approach: Study the classics and take copious amounts of notes. Books like…

I’ve read all of these books and dozens more, but I will warn you – the trial and error method of learning this material will take you forever.
Here’s a BETTER approach (if you want to work in academia): go back to school, join a lab, and learn from all the really smart people around you. This is what I did, and it was an amazing experience but it did come at a major cost. School is not cheap (to the tune of $10,000/semester on the low end), and you have minimal flexibility to manage your time as you see fit (classes meet at a specific day and time).
👉 Here’s the BEST approach: If you’re a busy coach and practitioner that wants to level up your knowledge without having to spend thousands of dollars and go sit in a classroom several times a week, then your best bet is to:
- Find someone who has been through the ropes and learned what you want to learn. This person will know all the most common pitfalls, can you steer you in the right direction, and help you learn more in 3 months than you will on your own in 12.
- Convince them to teach you.
This approach I am excited to share with you today.
Introducing…

A proven step-by-step system to learn how oxygen gets from the atmosphere to the muscle mitochondria and how to manipulate it (even if you have no science background)
The Oxygen Course is my secret playbook for helping busy coaches and practitioners get the advanced physiology education they need to level up without having to spend thousands of dollars and go sit in a classroom several times a week.
But this is more than just a course. It’s a masterclass and coaching system designed to take you by hand and teach you the equivalent of 3 graduate-level classes in 13 weeks.
WHAT WILL I LEARN IN THIS COURSE?
The course is all about unpacking the oxygen cascade – how does oxygen get from the atmosphere to the muscle mitochondria, and how can you manipulate it.

+ Learn in-depth vasodilator and vasoconstrictor pathways (what actually causes a blood vessel to constrict?)
+ Learn how the cardiovascular system uses reflexes and neurohumoral adjustments to balance the competing demands of blood pressure, resistance, and increasing blood flow to active skeletal muscle.
+ Learn the ins and outs of the adjustments made by the cardiovascular system to dynamic exercise (and why whole-body exercise is almost always centrally limited).
+ Learn the difference between functional criteria and performance criteria (and why VO2 max isn’t a performance criterion…people screw this up all the time)
+ Learn why you need to know both supply and extraction to calculate the volume of oxygen consumed by a muscle (critically important for anyone using a MOXY monitor).
+ Learn how the cardiovascular system can limit exercise performance and what you can do about it.
